No More Studios

Welcome to No More Studios! On this website, I will showcase the video games that I have created, as well as hosting some little projects that I have created. For the little projects that I create, I will give users full access to the source code; however, I do not intend on giving away the source code to my big projects that I complete (i.e. Ones that I sell on the Play Store ).

My Experience With Game Development

I personally have been figuring out how to make games since about 10th grade in high school, which was about 2008 or so. I started playing around with the Flash CS3 application from Adobe, and eventually made very tiny, simple games. Below is an example of some of the little flash games that I have made. Albeit it is a super simple game, it still took a long time to learn to even just create that from scratch. Of course, making that game itself only took me a few hours, but the learning I had to do just to be able to do that took a long time.

Of course one of the main hurdles in game development is creating graphics, something that I am horrible at as I have no patience in creating graphics. Also, it doesn't help that I am not a very creative person when it comes to making drawings, graphics, those kinds of things. So, when creating a video game, it always helps to have some graphic design under your belt along with some programming.

I also have created a little demo of a game for a high school competition back in 2011. It was basically a Zelda clone, but it was not any good. From November 2010 to March 2011, I was learning Java from scratch, and also had to have a game somewhat presentable by mid-March. The game was for a competition, and I was working with three other people in a team. Two of us were programmers, while the other two were the graphics designers. In the end, we did get 2nd in the state; however, we did not make it to the national competition. Ever since then, I have mainly just played around with developing games, but once in a while I'll begin a decent project. But, when I start working on these projects that I am ambitious about, steam is lost quickly. And that brings me into my next topic, the challenges of game development that I have experienced.

Game Development Challenges

Below is my top five list of the biggest challenges that I have experienced while trying to make some games.

  1. Patience
  2. Knowledge
  3. Dedication
  4. Negative Thoughts
  5. Patience Again

So basically looking at this list, an individual will clearly see that everything about game development is all mental. There have been plenty of times where I have a great project in mind, but in the end I never finish it. The reason behind this is due to some of the things in the list above. Patience is an absolute must in creating a game. Making a game sounds really fun and cool; however, when an individual starts making a game, he or she will absolutely realize that it is a humongous task. Games themselves are very fun, but creating them is something completely different.

The other big thing is to not give up hope on your project. Number four on my list is something that happens with everyone of my games that I try to make. After working on it for a couple days or weeks, I'll begin to start looking at it and start thinking to myself that it isn't very good. I'll see the other work that people have done on websites such as Kongregate, and Armor Games, and think to myself that my game will never be as good as the games on there. So, be ready to experience those kinds of ways of thinking. Other people may have a different experience, but those are what I personally experienced.

For those that are new to game development and want to try it out, below is part one of a game development tutorial series by Webvidtuts on YouTube that goes through a little bit about making a game in FlashDevelop with ActionScript 3. I highly recommend it as it is a good starting point to see how a game can be made. Also, that is my video on my Webvidtuts channel, so the information is coming straight from me!

On my next part of my final project assignment, I will post the code to the little flash game above! Come back next week for that!
